KVKs (Farm Science Centres) aim to achieve "fine tuning of agriculture technologies, training of farmers, rural youth, extension personnel and execution of programmes of national importance". Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Jaisalmer was established in 7th July 1992.Subsequently, this Kendra has developed infrastructure to run the need based skill oriented training programmes through "Learning by Doing". Three fundamental principles viz., (i) agricultural production - the prime goal, (ii) work experience - the main method of imparting training and (iii) weaker section of the society - the main target group, are always kept in mind. The main aim of KVK is to accelerate agricultural production and allied activities for improving economic status of farmers and create skill development for the poor amongst the poorest in the rural areas. At KVK, need based training courses are designed for different types of clientele. After training, follow up extension programmes are undertaken. The training starts from field units, different farms, live demonstration units, workshops and interactive sessions. For making training programmes more effective, the KVK has developed close linkages with different Government, Non-Government and voluntary agencies and line Departments in the district in particular and in country in general.
Mandate of KVK
"On-farm testing", refining and documenting technologies for developing region-specific sustainable land use systems. Collaborate with the subject-matter specialists of the State Agriculture Universities/Scientists of the Regional Research Station and the State Extension Personnel.
Organize front line demonstrations in various crops to generate production data and feedback information.
Organize vocational training courses in agriculture, scientific dairy farming, dairy processing, fish farming, bee-keeping, home science, vermi-compost making and allied vocations for the farmers, farm women rural youth and entrepreneurs.
Organize training to update the extension personnel within the area of operation with emerging advances in agricultural research on regular basis.
Priority thrust areas
Looking to the agro climatic condition and inventorisation of physical and human resource of district, the following thrust area has been identified.
Dissemination of dry land technology for pearl millet and other kharif crops, especially on moisture conservation and plant protection measures.
Improve soil fertility by compost & green manuring.
Introduction of improved varieties, bio-fertilizer, line sowing and other cultural practices in respect of rain-fed crops like bajra, moong, guar and til and rabi crops like wheat, mustard, cumin, isbgol and taramira.
Integration of crop and livestock system.
To fill-up the technological gaps in crop and livestock production by training of practicing farmers.
Training of grass root level extension workers to have wider area coverage of extension activities.
Promoting the processing of dairy products, value added agricultural products and preservation of fruit and vegetables.
Promoting preparation of vermi compost and its importance in organic farming.
Promotion of dry land farming technologies with emphasis on rain water harvesting.
To improve technique of rain water harvesting, cannal and underground water recharge.
To promote use of minerals & vitamins to enhance productivity of cattle goat & sheep.
To increase milk production and reduce calving interval in cattle.
Improving the local indigenous breeds of cattle sheep & goats by breeding and management.
Dissemination of the concept of agro forestry and soil conservation technology.
Upliftment of social & economic status of down trodden classes through vocational trainings.
Introduction of remunerative crops viz. cumin, mustard, isbgol and fenugreek (methi), vegetable, fruits (Pomegranate, date palm, ber, cucurbits, palak etc.) and their high yielding varieties.
